New Car Keys are now made at Walmart
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:19:46 AM »

For those of you who have the electronic key they now make them at Wal-Mart.  I have a 2003 Ford Taurus, and the dealership wanted to charge me $250.00, a lock and key company wanted to charge me $175.00.  We were just going to have one made for the door and the guy told us that they could only make ignition keys.  He made the key and it works great.  For only $67.95 with tax, so with the money that we saved Keith and I have now restocked the supplies for the blender for the next jeep ride.   :blender:  :D

And this is just the key, not the remote buttons?

Look here, under $5 delivered, you do have to get the key cut.

Huh!

The issue is with the electronics inside the key.  The key is cheap without the electronics.  I just ordered one because the housing was broke on mine.

You also need one with the transponder in it, Without it, the vehicle will not crank.  You can purchase a transponder, non electronic key, which will crank the vehicle.  if you have BOTH starting keys, then you can program the new transponder yourself.  If you have lost a key, self programming is not possible.

Here is that key:

Is that a clearer reply?

Gotcha!
In my situation, I'm just out of luck.
If I try to unlock my door at the door keyhole, my alarm goes off.
It's like they are giving no choice but to have the most expensive alternative.

Yeah, but that is what keeps your vehicle in your driveway and out of the chop shop.  :police:

yup!! you are absolutely right!
guess that'll be another thing to save and then spend on! a spare remote key.
I never would have thought we'd have remote keys for cars much less have to spend $250 on it.

Here it is for $116.46

I found this interesting:

"In order for us to cut the key for you, we will need you to send us the key code that can be found on your emergency key wallet.  If you do not have the key code, you can send us a few clear pictures of the original key blade, and we can cut the key from that. "

I would have never thought you could cut a key from a picture.
